Thornes edge past title rivals

    JC MSFL Division Three
    Blizzard Storm 0 Glenthorne United B 1
A solitary effort from Craig Sandford helped Glenthorne B edge a very tough game against a very organised Blizzard Storm team.

Blizzard dominated much of the first half but could not capitalise as the Glenthorne defence was rock solid for the second week in a row.

The home side delivered set-pieces extremely well but, frustratingly, could not get anything on the end and the sides went into half time goaless.

Glenthorne started the second half on the front foot with Josh Wynne and Rubin giving the full-backs the run around.

65 minutes in, Wynne received the ball on the right, beat his man and found Andy Levy who delivered a perfect cross to find Sandford who from eight yards out volleyed the ball into the top right corner.

More chances game Glenthorne's way with Wynne and Andy Levy having the best of them but Blizzard made sure there was no daylight between the sides.

A glaring chance came Storm's way with five minutes to go only for the defender to guide his header over the bar. Elliott Coulton also cleared a certain goal off the line with a great clearance.

Glenthorne dug in and held out to see out the victory and kept there second clean sheet in row with Law, Shafron, Bagel and Coulton in contention for man of the match.

Manager Craig Sandford told JC Sport: "I am delighted to come away with the three points. I don't think we will play against a tougher and more organised team all season.

"A 1-0 win for them or draw would also have been a fair result but we were just too strong over the 90 minutes."

"I want to mention our midfield unit which included Dan Lassman, Sam Rank and Paul Block as holding midfielders. These guys were rocks today and complemented our back four."

Blizzard boss Simon Linden told JC Sport: "We played some very good football and matched a very good Glenthorne side all over the park.

"It's been a very unfortunate start with two narrow losses but I'm confident we can turn it around quickly and do very well."
