Sela upbeat ahead of Australian Open

Dudi Sela goes into the Australian Open full of confidence having rediscovered his finest form.

Sela won the Israeli Open last month and is determined to put a poor run at grand slam competitions behind him as he looks to impress in Melbourne.

He failed to qualify for Wimbledon last year after slipping out of the top 100, but has climbed to 67th in the ATP rankings — his highest position since May 2012 — after reaching the quarter- finals of the Chennai Open in India last week. He beat Mikhail Youzhny (15) in the second round before bowing out 5-7, 7-6, 0-6 against Edouard Roger-Vasselin (40).

Sela said: "I had a bad year in 2013 but I’ve changed my rackets and elements of my play and that’s given me confidence for this year."

Shahar Peer (77) and Julia Glushko (89) both qualify for the main draw in Melbourne, but Peer is struggling to for form. She reached the third qualifying round at the APIA tournament in Sydney before bowing out against Tsvetana Pironkova (107) of Bulgaria. Glushko pulled out of the Hobart international with a knee injury but hopes to be fit for Melbourne.

Davis Cup pairing Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich will hope to recapture the form which saw them win the Men’s Doubles title in 2008.
