Salita wins New York title

articlemain

Dmitriy Salita floored late substitute James Wayka five times on his way to a third round knockout victory at New York's Roseland Ballroom.

Salita's body punching proved too much for the outclassed Wayka who was down twice in the second round and three more times in the third before referee David Fields waved the fight off.

The fight was billed for the vacant New York State title after Wayka, loser of 10 of his 27 fights, stepped in at short notice when Mike Anchondo, who was due to meet Salita for the vacant IBA welterweight title, withdrew through illness.

New York-based Salita took the opportunity to take another impressive step back with his second victory since his crushing first round defeat by Amir Khan when he challenged for the WBA world title in Newcastle last December.

The Khan defeat is the only one on Salita's 34-fight record which contains 32 wins - 17 inside the distance - and a draw.
