Republic in cup exit

Republic of Flixton’s preparations for next weekend’s Peter Morrison Trophy clash took a knock after they were dumped out of the FA Sunday Amateur Trophy.

The MJSL league leaders were beaten 3-1 by Eccles Premier Division side Salford Athletic in a hard-fought encounter.

Rob Jacobs’ second half strike had given Republic hope after they trailed 2-0 at the break.

But after having a goal disallowed, the hosts were caught out late on as Salford booked their place in the next round.

“Salford were a top, top team,” said co-manager Stuart Delmonte.

“They play in one of the top divisions in Manchester and were a very good side.

“But we gave them a good game and had a legitimate goal disallowed, which would have changed the game.

“But the boys did well against a very good team.”

Salford grabbed the lead with a spectacular 30-yard strike before doubling their advantage right on half time.

Jacobs pulled a goal back on the hour mark, but Salford sealed the win late on after the home side failed to clear a corner.

“That’s that now and we put this competition to bed,” added Delmonte.

“It’s all about the Morrison tie at Leeds next week and we can’t wait.”
