Ram: Israel can succeed

articlemain

Israel will be looking to return to the Davis Cup World Group at the first attempt when they entertain Canada in a promotion playoff at Ramat Hasharon.

Dudi Sela (96), Amir Weintraub (182) and doubles partners Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich will start as underdogs against Milos Raonic (31), Vasek Pospisil (124) and doubles specialist Daniel Nestor but the omens look favourable for an upset.

Raonic has pronounced himself fit after being sidelined by a hip injury sustained at Wimbledon, but it remains to be seen if he has fully recovered. Peter Polansky (573) is on standby.

Weintraub, making only his second appearance in the Davis Cup, will be boosted by reaching the final of last week's Bangkok Challenger, which saw him rise 28 places to a career high ranking.

Ram said: "We're the underdogs but our strength lies in our team spirit, not in the rankings. With a full stadium and the crowd behind us, I believe we can win."
