Racketlon is the future, says GB ace Lazarus

David Lazarus is hoping his world domination of Racketlon will help the sport become the next big thing in Britain.

The 47-year-old is the current world champion for the over-45 age group after clinching the title in Vienna last November.

Racketlon, which combines table tennis, squash, tennis and badminton, is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe.

Players play one set from each sport with the first to 21 points claiming victory, before the aggregate points total is added up to decide the overall winner.

"Racketlon is a fast growing sport and has a few celebrity players such as Stefan Edberg," said Lazarus, who has dominated the Jewish squash scene for years.

"It was great to win the World Championship in Vienna because I beat the number one player in the world.

"It's a great sport and because I've always been good at racket sports, I thought I would have a go at it."

Lazarus's 11-year-old daughter, Elise, is currently number one in England and Europe in girls Under- 13 squash.

Elise, who was shortlisted for the Maccabi GB Young Sportsperson of the Year, will represent England's Under 21 side in Racketlon later this year.

"Elise is an excellent table tennis player in particular. I coach her and play against her," said Lazarus, who has achieved a double-figure medal haul in European and Maccabiah Games. "Perhaps she'll be better than me in a couple of years but she's still got ome work to do."
