Poor finishing costs Lions

Spartan South Midlands League Division One: London Lions 1-1 New Bradwell St Pater

London Lions produced a good performance but were left frustrated with the result.

It was a game Lions dominated from the first minute to the last but a host of missed chances and one defensive lapse from a corner meant they only took one point when it should have been all three.

Josh Kennet fired Lions in front on 29 minutes with a fabulous finish and it looked likely they would kick on and win the game comfortably.

Unfortunately Lions wasted several opportunities to extend that lead with Ben Ellis, Dean Nyman and Ricky Engleman all guilty of missing good chances.

New Bradwell St Peter probably could not believe their luck as they equalised with 20 minutes remaining. With Lions keeper Dan Lee a virtual spectator for the whole 90 minutes, he ended up picking the ball out of the net on 70 minutes as Lions failed to deal with a routine corner allowing Smith who lost his marker Adam Myeroff to head home unchallenged from five yards.

Lions manager Tony Gold said: "Should we have won? Absolutely, 100 per cent yes. I am disappointed with the end result but can’t be unhappy about our performance.

"It was a frustrating day for us all; if you have 10 attempts on goal and seven on target ultimately you expect to win the game. However, if the performances carry on like that we will win far more than we draw or lose.

"I couldn't ask any more from the lads. We broke them down magnificently, created chances but couldn't find the finishing quality to get the ball into the net to win the game. But it was a great performance.

"I thought we carried a threat the whole game but once again we paid the price for not being clinical at either end. All in all, putting the result aside, it was another good performance with the team moving in the right direction."

Lions: Dan Lee, Danny Berg, Adam Myeroff, Guy Morris, Kyle Bentwood, Sam Sloma, Josh Kennet, Ricky Engleman (sub: Mike Kenley), Ben Ellis (sub: Ben Lampert), Andy Glynne, Dean Nyman

    Man-of-the-match: Dean Nyman
