Phillips stars in Belmont victory

articlemain

An unbeaten 38 from Joel Phillips steered Belmont & Edgware to victory as they beat Haryom in the Middlesex Sunday League Division Three.

Tight spells from opening bowlers Gideon Restan (1-12) and Mike Prager set the tone for BECC to restrict Haryom to 138. Neil Myeroff (1-20) bowled beautifully in tandem with chief destroyer Stuart Davis (4-24). Phillips chipped in with 2-17 at the death.

Simon Durban (26), Warren Averbuch (32), batting with the aid of a runner, laid the platform for Phillips to see the job through.

MAL also made a winning start with a comprehensive 157-run victory over West Middlesex. They posted 268-7 with Yoav Lebens (52), Grant Traub (42 not out), Mark Landau (34) and Pinty Baddiel (33) the chief contributors. Landau and Russell Corin made their intentions clear early on, smashing 32 from the first 12 balls. They put on 81 for the first wicket. Lebens carried on the good work with a half century from 48 balls.

Middlesex subsided from 26-0 to 40-4 with Jon Begner breaking the stumps with two full-pitched deliveries. Traub mopped up the tail with 5-7 from 5.4 overs as the last five wickets fell for two runs.

London Maccabi Vale 1st bowed out of the Cricket Conference Cup following a six-wicket defeat at Beaconsfield. Danny Caro, Martin Schultz, Mark Bott and Jon Galloway made useful contributions but the tail did not wag as LMV subsided for 148.

LMV failed to build on an excellent new ball burst from Daniel Cohen that restricted Beaconsfield on 2-4. The Home Counties Premier outfit were let off the hook as LMV spilled five catches. Beconsfield eventually cruised home with wickets and overs to spare.

A century from Simon Williams was not enough to earn Leeds Maccabi victory against 2009 runners-up Manchester Maccabi in the NJCL. With both teams missing key players, the experienced Simon Mowbury (45) and Williams steadily gave the Yorkshiremen a good foundation as they went past the 50 mark with few problems. Steven Allweis picked up a couple of quick wickets but he could not stop the in-form Williams, who followed up his 50 earlier in the season, by reaching the magical 100 mark as Leeds closed on 170-5 from 35 overs.

An unbeaten 88 from Simon Jeffries plus a useful knock from young all-rounder Jake Woolfstein (29) helped Maccabi keep up with the required rate. They added a vital 63 before Jeffries continued to take advantage of wayward bowling, taking the game away from Leeds and ease home with more than three overs to spare to record a club record 15th consecutive win in all competitions.
