Peer set to be 'best ever' Israeli tennis player

Shahar Peer is set to become the highest-ever ranked Israeli tennis player after reaching the fourth round of the French Open.

A straight-sets defeat against top seed Serena Williams could not dampen a week where Peer will move up to 14 in the WTA rankings, surpassing Anna Smashnova's best ranking of 15, and her own career high of 15 achieved in January 2007.

Seeded 18, Peer played superb tennis to beat 13th seed Marion Bartoli 7-6, 6-2 in the third round but could not repeat the performance against Williams who won 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes.

Peer's coach Pablo Jacopelli said: "Shahar did not play her regular game against Williams. She did not play well from the mentality point of view. Serena Williams is one of the very few players who can beat Shahar like this."

Andy Ram and his Austrian partner Julian Knowle reached the semi-final of the in the men's doubles.
