Shahar Peer had a smile on her face after reaching the second round of the ladies doubles at Wimbledon on Thursday afternoon.

The Israeli was at rock bottom after her shock elimination in the first round of the singles on Monday, but she moved around the court with fluency and played with conviction as she and Cara Black claimed a straight sets win over Brits Sarah Borwell and Melanie South on a packed Court 5.

Peer said:: "I was very happy with my performance. I played good tennis and served and volleyed well.

"After going out of the singles, it was a good thing to have the doubles and I'm happy to still be involved in Wimbledon.

"I haven't played together with Cara too much but she's a very good player."

The duo did not give home fans the chance to muster more than a few rallying cheers for the British pairing.

"They were pretty good players," said Peer. "We knew we had to stay focused and keep up our momentum."

There was also joy for American Scott Lipsky. Together with Rajeev Ram, he fought back from a set down to beat the big-serving Jarkko Nieminen and Johan Brunstrom – 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court 10.

"We were unlucky in the first set," said Lipsky. "We had 15 break points but didn't convert them.

"We didn't get discouraged and kept our heads up. We served well and closed the game out."

Lipsky returns to action today. He and Casey Dellacqua, the French Open champions, take on Christopher Kas and Chaia-Jung Chuang in match three on Court 17. Lipsky and Dellacqua are seeded four in the competition.

Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich lost the first set against Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Ivo Karlovic. The matches continues on Court 8 on Friday.
