Peer makes early exit at US Open

Shahar Peer's miserable run of form continued as she crashed out of the US Open against a qualifier at Flushing Meadows.

The Israeli was beaten in straight sets by Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain - her sixth consecutive exit at the first round stage.

Crucially, Arruabarrena-Vecino broke Peer's serve to take the first 6-4 in 37 minutes.

Indeed service was an important part of the contest with Peer making eight double faults as well as eight unforced errors.

The second set, which lasted over an hour, was an even closer affair with both players slugging it out in a tie-breaker, but the Spaniard held her nerve to win it 7-5.

There was better news for Israel in the Men's Doubles where Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich progressed.

The Olympic quarter-finalists beat Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin 7-6, 6-2.
