Peer looks to prosper in NY

Shahar Peer's prepararations for next week's US Open suffered a blow as she sank to an embarrassing defeat at the Texas Open.

Peer, who is ranked 24 in the world, was blown away by Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-4.

Larsson, who sits 40 places below Peer in the rankings, was just the latest player to inflict more pain on the Israeli.

Having defeated Anastasiya Yakimova (84) of Belarus in the opening round, Peer looked out of sorts ahead of next week's tournament in New York.

Peer reached the fourth round of the US Open last year and will be hard pressed to improve.

Recent victories over Wimbledon sensation Sabine Lisicki and France's Pauline Parmentier in Cinncinati had given plenty of reason for optimism.

But a 6-3 6-2 defeat to China's Shuai Peng saw her crash out of the tournament in the third round.

In the men's section, Dudi Sela who only qualified for Wimbledon as a wild card entry after slipping to 146 in the rankings earlier this year, is back up at 94 and qualifies automatically for the US Open main draw.

After taking several weeks off from the ATP tournament, Sela made it through to the second round at the Winston-Salem Open where he was beaten in straight sets by America's John Isner.

Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich will be playing in the mens doubles at Flushing Meadows as they attempt to recapture past form.

Julia Glushko (170) and Amir Weintraub (196) will be playing in this week's US Open qualifiers.
