Oliel moves into round three in Boy's Singles at US Open

Yshai Oliel surprised second seed Alex de Minaur on his way to the third round of the Boy’s Singles competition at the US Open.

The 16-year-old Israeli showed enormous character to battle back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the second-round match against the Australian who lies 614 in the adult rankings.

Oliel’s coach Jean Poutchtar said: "Yshai starts every match now believing that he can beat any opponent. He believes that he is as good as anybody despite his lower ranking."

The youngster from Ramla has won the World Orange Bowl Under 14 title and in June he won the French Open boys doubles title at Roland Garros with Patrik Rikl of the Czech Republic. He is a product of the David Squad for top Israeli tennis youngsters, established by UK businessman David Coffer and his son, Adam.

Oliel is due to play 13th seed Nicola Kuhn of Spain in the third round.

There was also joy for Shelly Krolitsky, another product of The David Squad, who reached the second round in the Girl's Singles.
