Oakhill Lions win Shonn Trophy

articlemain

Two goals from Jake Gilbert helped Oakhill Lions win the Shonn Trophy after beating Manchester Maccabi 3rd 3-1.

An exciting final was not decided until the last few minutes at Salford City FC's Moor Lane ground.

Oakhill broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when Gilbert was left unmarked and volleyed home spectacularly from 10 yards.

The Oaks doubled the lead on the stroke of half time when a goalkeeping error allowed Ben Horn to fire home.

Maccabi pushed forward in search of goals in the second half and they forced the Oaks on to the back foot. From a series of corners, one was cleared off the line while Richler-Kleiman hit the post from an acute angle. The pressure eventually paid off when Greg Louca looped a header over the stranded keeper.

This gave Maccabi hope with barely 10 minutes left but going in search of an equaliser, they left gaps at the back and it was no surprise when the students sealed the match as Gilbert broke clear to bury the ball into the bottom corner.

Victory saw Oakhill lift the trophy for the third time and they will be looking to complete a cup double when they take on Haroldeans in the Feldman Trophy final at Oldham Athletic's Boundary Park on May 16.

An Adam Cross double took Haroldeans a point clear at the top of the MJSL Joan Collins Premier Division after they beat Broughton Park 2-1. The victory lifted Merseysiders above South Manchester Maccabi 2nd with one game remaining.

Ben Rose hit four goals as Westdene 1st thumped Crumpsall 2.
