Morehouse eliminated in quarter-finals

USA fencer Tim Morehouse celebrated his 34th birthday by taking to the piste in men's sabre at the Excel centre.

After a first round bye he saw off the Russian Veniamin Reshetnikov 15/6 to progress to the last-16 stage.

There he met Bulgarian Dmitri Lapkes, who he overcame 15/13. Morehouse led for most of the fight but Lapkes pressured his and the final stages were tense with several appeals to the video referee by Lapka.

Morehouse lost out though in his quarter-final against Diego Occhiuzzi to whom he lost 15/9 in a fight interrupted several times with technicalities and appeals to the video referee by Occhizzi

Morehouse, whose maternal grandmother escaped the Nazis in the 1930s, took a silver team medals in Beijing and team gold in the 2011 Pan American Games.

According to reports, he has his eyes set on next year's Maccabiah Games in Israel.
