Masters round-up

articlemain

Maccabi’s football masters (over 45s) completed their Israel tour with a hard-fought victory over Anglo Israel Masters, their third game in five days.

The 14-man squad, which included members of the gold medal-winning Maccabiah Games squad, had suffered two heavy defeats at the hands of Israel Masters, despite some outstanding goalkeeping by Lenny Wyse.

In the final match, captain Jon Holman put Maccabi ahead from distance but Moshe Frankfurter equalised minutes later.

Quickfire goals from Martin Lerner and Marc Morris put the visitors 3-1 early in the second half but a brace from David Kovler levelled the scores.

Maccabi went on to win 6-3 with Morris completing his hat-trick and Holman adding the other. Morris top-scored with five goals but player of the tour was keeper Wyse.

Stuart Lustigman who organised and led the tour said: “This was the fifth Masters’ tour in seven years and although the programme was very demanding, we experienced Israel in a way that just would not happen during a normal visit.

“The players came to Israel with football on their minds but left with Israel in their hearts. Mission accomplished.”
