Manchester Maccabi beat Bury

Manchester Maccabi moved into the second round of the Maccabi GB National Knockout Cup after beating Bury & Whitefield by 30 runs.

Good work with the new ball from Josh Rose restricted Maccabi to 6-2. Simon Jeffries (25) held the innings together but good work from Mason and Schogger, who also chipped in with two wickets apiece in economical spells, frustrated Maccabi.

Young all-rounder Adam Goldstone (15) who led from the front with a measured knock on a bowler-friendly track, aided by his team-mates lower down the order who all chipped in with runs to push Maccabi over the 100-mark despite Levington grabbing three late wickets in a tight spell of his own.

Maccabi gamely batted through to the final over of their innings ending their innings on a creditable 105.

Bury had plenty of time to reach their target and started well led by Zevi Saunders (10) as they reached 21-1. What they had not banked on was the combination of economical and lethal bowling from Goldstone (3-13 off 8 overs), Steven Allweis (2-7), Daniel Franks (1-7), Ashley Landes and young Andrew Williams (4-22).

Despite some resistance from Adam Schogger (12), Maccabi wrapped the game up swiftly grabbing the remaining nine Bury wickets for only 43 runs giving the visitors a convincing 40-run victory.

Maccabi now get to travel to play MAL in London in the quarter-finals on May 30.

There was a shock in the Northern Jewish Cricket League when South Manchester Maccabi suffered their first defeat in two years. They were beaten by Salford.
