"Each time the Maccabiah comes around, I am reminded of a scene in a classic film ‘Airplane’ when one of the passengers on the flight turns to the air stewardess and politely asks if she has any “light reading”. The stewardess disappears up the aisle and returns a short while later with a very small pamphlet in her hand. It is entitled ‘Famous Jewish sportspeople!’

"Because of the Maccabiah, that particular chapter of the People of the Book grows year on year. This year’s Games, including an astonishing 9,000 athletes representing 71 countries, has been an amazing success. I commend all those involved who participated, as well as all those involved in the organisation of the event itself. Particular praise should especially be awarded to Maccabi GB, an organisation whose outstanding work has given so much to Anglo-Jewry over so many years. Chazak, chazak v’nitchazek! The adrenalin-filled Opening Ceremony; the marching into Teddy Stadium; our Great Britain uniform standing-out from the other delegations; our athletes looking strong and proud.
