Maccabi Masters review: April 14

articlemain

The surprise result of the day belonged to Division Two side London Maccabi Lions, who beat Division One champions and cup holders Brady Maccabi A to reach the final of the Henry Swerner Cup.

Marc Morris put Lions ahead after the break, but Brady equalised through Jason Harris' thundering drive in the 90th minute. But the Lions held their nerve to go through 5–4 on penalties.

Brady manager Daniel Collins was full of praise for his opponents, saying: "It was an excellent Lions' performance, and we wish them the best of luck in the final."

That final will be contested between Lions and the winners of North London Raiders and South Mancunians, after Raiders won their quarter-final tie against Waldaf Town 3–1, thanks to two goals from Darren Cohen along with a strike from Gary Cohen. Mike Kintish scored for Waldaf.

The final of the Nathan Horwitz Division Two Cup will see Glenthorne B face EDRS Stonegrove after both recorded convincing semi-final victories, over Marshside and Temple Fortune Old Boys respectively.

EDRS won 7–1 against Temple Fortune thanks to a hat-trick from Martin Seifert, plus strikes from Ian Leader, Russell Rich, Mark Kingston and an own goal. Yali Mamouri replied from the penalty spot for Temple Fortune.

Fortune boss David Goldberg said: "Nobody played well from the start. We let in some poor goals and we were simply rubbish. We didn't seem up for it and just couldn't get started. I'm very disappointed because this was a great chance to reach the Final and we blew it."

Glenthorne B went one better as they demolished Marshside 8–1 courtesy of a hat-trick from Gary Adams, two strikes from Sid Shaw, goals from Greg Morris, Gary Swerner and an own goal. Dan Cuby scored Marshside's consolation goal.

Marshside's Danny Fenton was sent off for a second yellow card in the closing minutes for fouling Paul van Gelder once too often.

In the one league game of the day, St John's Wood Tigers maintained their outside chances of the Division Twp title with a 5–2 win over Ashlodge.

Johnny Mansoor and Paul Herszaft scored two each, with Gary Starr also on target. Vince Goodman and Geoff Isaacs scored for Ashlodge.
