European Maccabi Games: Day Seven review

Team Maccabi GB capped a memorable final day of competition at the 15th European Maccabi Games in Budapest by winning gold in Open Men's Football, Junior U16 Futsal and Junior U18 Futsal.

A cool strike from Austin Lipman earned Team Maccabi GB the gold medal in Open Football as they won a thriller against France.

Andy Landesberg's men enjoyed the lionsshare of possession and they had a golden chance to open the scoring following a foul on Adam Bolle. But Adam Burchell's penalty struck the post and was cleared by the France defence. But he made amends in the second half with a wonderful volley to put GB ahead. But France equalised less than a minute later. But a cool finish from Austin Lipman put GB 2-1 ahead with 20 to go.

U18 FOOTBALL FINAL: (RESULT: GB 1 ARGENTINA 0 - GOLD MEDAL)

Dylan Krikler fired GB to gold as they edged out Argentina 1-0.

U18 FUTSAL FINAL: (RESULT: GB 7 HUNGARY 3 - GOLD MEDAL)

Team Maccabi GB retained the U18 gold medal after registering an impressive 7-3 win over hosts Hungary.

Goals from Harry Caplin, Sammy Garcia, Josh Morris, Raphy Simons, Toby Anthony, Eytan Millan and Josh Davidson sparked scenes of celebrations as GB won their second junior futsal gold of the day.

Joint-manager Lustigman, who led the team with Phil Caplin, said: “We saved our best performance for the final match and peaked at the right time. We had a game-plan to nullify their best players and it worked to perfection, while also taking our chances.

“It has been an incredible Games, both on and off the court. The support from the masses of family and friends has helped us through and we’ve got some amazing memories from this trip.”

U16 FUTSAL FINAL: (RESULT: GB 1 SOUTH AFRICA 1 - after extra-time - GB won on penalties - GOLD MEDAL)

Team Maccabi GB retain the EMG U16 Futsal gold medal after beating South Africa on penalties in a thrilling final.

Trailing 0-1, a last-ditch from Oliver Kaye took the game to extra-time. With no further goals, it went to penalties, with Dylan Phillips, Reuben Wapnick, Brandon Roach and Josh Nathan converting to guide GB to victory.

GB manager Scott Warren told JC Sport: "It was an amazing achievement from an amazing group of boys. We exceeded all expectations and this experience will keep me coming back for more.

"Futsal is growing massively and GB Futsal is getting stronger year after year. This year proved that by winning gold in both the U16 and U18 categories, we are a real force to be reckoned with. Roll on Maccabiah 2021!

U16 FOOTBALL RESULT: GB 10 ITALY 0

A four-goal bonanza from Jasper van Veen (4) steered Team Maccabi GB to a 10-0 win over Italy - and silver in U16 Junior football.

Further strikes from Jesse Tapnack, Ben Barnett, Dan Misrahi, Josh Ruff, Tyler Gordon and Jonah Rose added the gloss in a one-sided contest.

Assistant-manager Sammy Kingston told JC Sport: "Managers Danny Schweiger, Mark Stewart and I are so proud of the boys - after our first game we knew it would be a huge task to pick them up and go again but after that we haven’t lost, only conceded two and scored 27 in five.

"The desire and courage they’ve shown throughout is immense and they all thoroughly deserve to come home from this tournament with a medal round their neck. Maybe if the format was different or if our games were in a different order then it could’ve been different. But we can’t have complaints! We’re coming home European silver medalists."

TENNIS

Sam Bossem and Josef Randall win Junior Tennis Boys Doubles gold after winning the final 6-1, 6-2.

GB's tennis squad won 28 medals in total - 11 golds, six silver and 11 bronze medals,. Team Maccabi GB tennis chair Stephen Joseph said: “We’ve won a record tally and everyone in the squad excelled themselves. Our juniors and Open players cleaned up, with each won winning gold."

SWIMMING

Team Maccabi GB won an incredible 41 medals, with joint-managers Elisha Kramer and Chloe Jacobs praising their squad for their "incredible achievements".

Kramer told JC Sport: "Every member of the swimming squad medalled. They performed superbly in amazing facilities, and it was great for myself and Chloe to be able to compete and manage. Overall I'd give our squad a ten out of ten!"
