Jonathan Kurrant is confident the Maccabi GB team will impress when the FA Futsal National League kicks-off on Sunday.

Kurrant has taken over the reins from former boss Jonathan Cohen and he believes the team can push on in Division Two.

"I’m very excited," said Kurrant. "Jonathan Cohen has done a terrific job gaining attention and knowledge of futsal into the Jewish community, and my hope is with the training, my experiences and drawing on the pool of talent we can push on and really compete this season."

Kurrant praised the 22 players who attended trials, which featured "a mix of novices to the squad with Maccabiah players that have just represented across all age groups and extremely gifted football players willing to make the transition to futsal".

He said: "All have the technical and tactical capabilities, but futsal is a fast-paced, quick decision-making sport and it tests you mentally."

The Maccabi team failed to record a point in 10 league games last season, but the Team GB player-coach is confident they will raise their game in a division that includes Braintree FC, FC Enfield, Kickers, LB Herts and Sport London Benfica.

He said: "We are under no illusion of the difficulties every game will possess this season, but our aspirations are high.

"Realistically, with the pool of talent we have and the improvement in training, a top three finish is definitely a target, with the hope of making the promotion playoff to Division One.

"Without giving too much away, our strongest side will be very good on the ball and retaining possession will be our forte, but we will be quick on the break too. We have the ability to compete and each game will be fascinating to watch."
