Lions ready for title showdown

articlemain

London Lions’ title hopes were dealt a blow after they were held 1-1 by Sandridge Rovers in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division on Tuesday night.

A first-half strike from midfielder Daniel Stanton put the Lions ahead but they were left to rue missed chances as Rovers equalised after 75 minutes.

James Gershfield and Dean Nyman spurned chances to kill the game off.

Lions manager Tony Gold said: “Sandridge is always a difficult place to go. We played well on a terrible pitch in what was our seventh match in 14 days.

The result follows a 2-0 victory over Lemsford at the weekend. Recent signing Paul Hakim and Stanton were the marksmen.

The Lions host table-toppers Wormley Rovers at Rowley Lane on Saturday. Kick-off 2pm.

Looking ahead to the clash, Gold said: “It’s a must-win but that was always going to be the case.”

HSCL Premier Division Table:

Wormley Rovers Pl. 29, W. 24, D. 0, L. 5, F. 80, A. 32, Pts. 72
London Lions Pl. 27, W. 21, D. 5, L. 1, F. 69, A. 22, Pts. 68
