Lightning triumph at Manchester tournament

South Lightning beat a Barbarians side by 33 wickets to win the NJCL Super Sixes tournament in Manchester on Sunday.

The sides met in the final after finishing in the top two places of a league also featuring teams from Bury and Leeds.

The Barbarians, comprising players from several clubs, had no answer to the superb batting prowess of South's Jonny Lieberman, who was undefeated on 27, and captain Steve Glicher, who retired on 31 off just 12 balls.

When the Barbarians came to bat, they were faced with the prospect of overhauling South's total of 93 runs off seven overs. The task was made even more difficult after an excellent first over from Shaya Rabinowitz, who bowled and caught Shiers with his first ball of the innings, and Price with his third.

The Barbarians reacted bravely and steady batting from Wineberg and Paul helped them to reach a respectable 60 runs, but this couldn't prevent a comfortable South Lightning triumph.

Jonny Lieberman, who hit over 8o runs and remained undefeated throughout, was named player of the tournament. A Maccabi side beat Leeds to finish third.

In the Junior fixture, North Manchester achieved the most marginal of victories over South Manchester, prevailing by just two wickets to retain the trophy. Going into bat, South finished on 37 runs, with Daniel Glicher contributing 13. Excellent bowling from North's Phillips, who bowled 2 for 2, and Margolis, who bowled 1 for 5, kept the score down.

Going into bat, the outlook appeared bleak for North Manchester, as Daniel Glicher bowled superbly, finishing with figures of 3 for 4 off his two overs, whilst Ilan Mesrie managed 1 for 4. At 10 for 4, North looked down and out, but some tenacious batting from Berger and Sheldon allowed North to reach their target with 4 balls to spare.
