Leeds Maccabi began their defence of the Leeds Sunday Alliance Premier League with an opening day 6-2 win at home to Northern Star.

After a nervous opening 15 minutes from both teams, the game soon settled down with Leeds Maccabi creating more of the chances, but it was Northern Star who opened the scoring with a well worked goal from a set-piece.

Soon after, Rob Selwyn struck a well-taken penalty to even things up before Northern Star scored a stunning free kick which gave the Leeds keeper, Marc Miller, no chance.

Nick Vale, a constant attacking threat throughout the game, was on target to level things up with the game evenly poised at 2-2 going in at half time.

A slight change in formation at the start of the second half led to Leeds taking charge of the game in midfield, where Howard Moss was marshalling the midfield superbly. Maccabi were soon awarded a second penalty after Vale was brought down as he was through on goal. Selwyn stepped up to coolly slot home his second penalty of the game to make it 3-2.

However, the changing point of the game was when Northern Star’s main threat and creator of all their good work was sent off half way through the second half.

Leeds Maccabi took full advantage of the extra man with Max Klineberg, playing at left back, enjoying the space created by the sending off which gave him the freedom to attack with a Man of the Match performance.

Leeds then went on to score three further goals through Elliot Jackson, Steven Berke and an absolute stunner from Oshri Amar before Northern Star had another player sent off in the closing minutes.

So, despite going behind twice, this was a great opening day win for the team who showed great determination and spirit to come out worthy winner on the day.
