Leeds Maccabi 1st bounced back with a five-star performance by crushing Torpedo Woodhall.

Ian Selwyn’s men had lost three games on the spin but showed great character to keep their title challenge on track.

Maccabi sit second in the table, six points behind league leaders New Unicorn with a game in hand.

And after watching his side return to winning ways, Selwyn was quick to praise his players.

“It was important to get ourselves back to winning ways and stay in touch at the top of the league,” said Selywn.

“I think the league is the most critical for this season, but we can now concentrate on next week's cup competition, which I believe we have a real chance of winning.

“The lads did well in tough conditions. We knew Torpedo would come here and make a game of it and all credit to them.

“A win next week and we will be able to rest reasonably satisfied during the winter break.”

Both teams struggled early with the boggy surface, but it was Maccabi who struck first when Dan Davidson fired home from just inside the penalty area.

But any thoughts Maccabi might have had of an easy victory were soon extinguished as the visitors equalised with a looping effort.

That goal seemed to reinvigorate Selywn’s side and the introduction of Mark Korn and Dave Woolman made an instant impact.

Just minutes after entering the action, Woolman latched on to Dan Ross’ flick and fired the ball home with ease.

Maccabi continued to pile forward and left-back Max Klineberg added a sublime third with a rasping 30-yard drive.

The visitors appeared to be losing hope and Oshri Amar grabbed a fourth after Ross’ shot had been blocked by a Torpedo defender.

The only blot on an otherwise perfect day was the dismissal of Elliot Jackson, who was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.

Woolman added a late fifth after running onto a through ball and lashing home to cap an impressive cameo performance.
