Lazarus helps Lions Vets make their point

    GARSTON VETS LEAGUE
LONDON LIONS 2 SOUTHGATE OLD BOYS 2

A well-deserved point against another strong outfit proved Lions are made of sterner stuff this season.

They set up with a 4-5-1 formation, with Bradley Lazarus as the lone striker and Danny Reuben pushing forwad from midfield to support him wherever possible.

The first half performance was slightly below par but nevertheless, Lions were denied a stonewall penalty and went into the break 0-0.

The Lions produced a much better second half show all over the park, but we still found themselves 1-0 down after Craig Henry sliced a clearance which looped over the defence for Southgate to take the lead.

Soon after, Lazarus scored a spectacular solo effort with a stunning drive from 30-plus yards which the keeper could do nothing about.

Midway through the second half, Reuben in his role as player-manager, with Paul Wise away on scouting duties, made a reshuffle and substition with Henry slotting into left back and Barry Silkman coming on in midfield and pulling the strings, and picking teammates out with fantastic long range passing.

Lions were in the ascendency and looked favourites to go on and win the game but conceded a free kick late on in a dangerous area which was driven in low and hard.

With barely three minutes remaining, Andy Myers pushed up from central defence and he was sent through on goal to have his rasping shot parried by the keeper which was pounced upon by Lazarus who simply does not miss from that sort of range.

With Lazarus in such irresistable form, and a much stronger back bone to the team, Lions are a match for anyone this season.
