Last hole victory for Israel golfers

articlemain

Israel won the first annual golf match against GB at the Caesaria Golf Club.

The 12-man visiting GB squad lined up against a strong team of Israelis, led by Maccabiah Masters silver medallist Barry Shaked. Itamar Cohen, an ex-tour professional and several times national champion, was in charge of the Israeli team.

On a windy, cloudy day, with conditions more reminiscent of Scottish rather than Israeli weather, GB started as favorites in a contest played between six pairs, playing a four-ball better-ball.

Caesaria had decked out the club in Union flags and Israeli flags, with GB playing in white shirts and blue caps, Israel in blue hats and white caps

Former GB Maccabiah Games golf captain Adam Musikant with Edward Misrahi and Jeremy Smouha and Roger Gladstone won their games convincingly to give GB an early 2-0 advantage. However Israel fought back and with the match evenly balanced and a 3-3 tie expected, Israel clinched the match with the last putt on the last hole to win 4-2, leaving Jeremy Smouha to present the trophy to the Israeli team.

GB team: Jeremy Smouha (capt), Adam Musikant, Andrew Brecher, Edward Misrahi, Russell Nathan, Errol Rudnick, Sam Rudnick, Roger Gladstone, David Cohen, Lawrence Sugarman, Dan Jacobs, David Kyte
