Kayal: Israel must believe at Euro finals

Beram Kayal is confident Israel’s youngsters will give a good account of themselves at next month’s Euro under-21 finals.

The host nation has been drawn against England in Group A but the Celtic star believes Israel can progress.

"It’s a good chance for Israel to prove themselves on the big stage," Kayal said. "I missed my opportunity at that age group but it’s important the team plays their own game, enjoys the tournament and believes in themselves.

"It will be a very strong competition and it won’t be easy for Israel but everything is possible. Just look at Celtic – no-one gave us a chance against Barcelona in the Champions League but we proved everyone wrong.

"It’s a great chance for Israeli players to show they have the talent to play in the big leagues."

Having helped Celtic retain the SPL title, Kayal is now concentrating on Israel’s World Cup campaign. "The national team is doing well," he said. "It’s great to be back in the squad after injury and we believe we have a great chance."

A 3-3 draw against strongly fancied Portugal has left them on course for the playoffs as Eli Guttman’s men look to become only the second Israel team to reach the finals.

Kayal said: "It would be the best moment for everyone in Israel if we can do it. It’s been too long and the fans deserve to go to Brazil."
