JC MSFL Matchday 20 review

articlemain

Lions A and Camden Park booked their place in the semi-finals of the JC Cyril Anekstein Cup, while North London Raiders A ended Oakwood A's long unbeaten record on Matchday 20 of the JC MSFL season. Once again, the league programme was decimated by the weather, with only a handful of matches played. Danny Caro looks back on the action.

CAMDEN END BRADY'S CUP DREAM
CAMDEN PARK 2 BRADY MACCABI B 1
Camden Park booked their place in the semi-finals of the JC League Cup following a hard fought win over Brady B.

Guy Marks and Michael Khalastchi were the goal men for Camden in well-contested cup tie.

A goal five minutes from time stopped Brady from taking the tie to extra-time after Daniel Hildebrand had cancelled out the Camden opener.

Camden finished the game with 10 men after Rob Hershkorn was sent off after receiving two cautions from referee Andy Myerson.

Brady boss Josh Dagul told JC Sport: "It was a really close game. We're gutted. The boys were superb."

"There are lots of positives to take from today. We pushed a good team from the league above all the way, and that is a huge positive. For long parts of the game we were comfortable, controlling and dictating the tempo of the game, falling behind only at the last.

"As nice as it was to reach the quarter-finals of the cup - and don't get me wrong, we thoroughly enjoyed our cup campaign and are gutted to have gone out and not have had the opportunity to play in a semi-final - the league was always number one priority for us. All our energies are now concentrated on winning our remaining games; if we do that we will be champions for a second consecutive year."

HENDON PAY THE PENALTY
HENDON UNITED SPORTS CLUB A 0 LONDON MACCABI LIONS A 0 AET (Lions won 3-1 on penalties)
Holders Hendon were eliminated from the competition after the Lions held their nerve to win on penalties at Rowley Lane.

Adam Myeroff, Nick Landesberg and Charlie Rubin converted in the shootout, with keeper Max Shields capping a fine performance with a crucial save to send the Lions through.

Jubilant Lions boss Andy Landesberg told JC Sport; "This result today clearly shows that this team is going from strength to strength - yes we missed our goal machine Lee Cash, but the way every single player gave 100 per cent and more today showed that at last Lions have got back their roar.

Hendon manager David Garbacz told JC Sport: ""This was a real heart-wrenching defeat. I’m not sure we have ever lost on penalties before and all the old clichés about it being the most painful way to lose are definately true.

"We wish Lions all the best in the latter stages of this cup and congratulate them on a hard battling win."

Jubilant Raiders boss Rob Richman told JC Sport: "We followed up our performance from the Brady win with an equally good display today. While it wasn't the prettiest game to watch it must be regarded one of our best wins since being in the top division. Oakwood have been unbeaten for close to 15 months now and that is some record so to manage to beat them is a great achievement.

Reflecting on the defeat, Oakwood joint-manager Ric Blank told JC Sport: "We were gutted to lose our unbeaten run today. We last lost a league game November 2011 - it's been an unbelievable run but it had to end at some stage. The real shame is we didn't do ourselves justice today.

FOUR-MIDABLE MILL HILL MARCH ON
BOCA JEWNIORS 0 AC MILL HILL 4
As predicted, leaders AC Mill Hill boosted their title hopes with an easy 4-0 win over Boca.

Two goals from player-manager Joe Levy plus one apiece from Adam Lenz and Ben Grabiner eased them home.

Mill Hill forged ahead with an early strike from levy and Grabiner doubled the lead shortly after.

The hosts looked tired in the second half but started to play the ball around like and Lenz came off the bench to make an immediate impact with a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner. Levy finished the scoring with a bullet header from a corner.

A delighted Levy told JC Sport: "There was definitely a lot of rustiness to shake off having not played for a month or so. Fitness levels have dropped after the winter break and it was tough going on an astroturf pitch."

"Credit must go to Boca who defended well. We have played teams who are not as good as them this season and I am unsure whether their league position is a true reflection of their ability."

OAKS IN SEVENTH HEAVEN
NORSTAR C 2 OAKWOOD B 7
Title-chasing Oakwood B finished in seventh heaven as they outclassed Norstar C with an emphatic 7-2 victory at the Ark, with keeper Oren Hury scoring the goal of the game with a strike that travelled the length of the pitch.

Oakwood's goals came through BEN POLAK, with a hat-trick, player-managerIan Tussie, Matt Geey and Charlie Cohen.

Ali Gordon bagged a brace for Norstar.

Oakwood manager Ian Tussie told JC Sport: "I'm really happy for Oren, he's a very popular player in the squad and has been great this season improving every week. It's not often a keeper scores direct from a goal kick but it was bashert that he'd be the man to do it.

"I'm surprised to see their manager's post-match comments that they were expecting a much tougher opposition. Hopefully next time we give them a harder game"

Norstar boss Zack Gothelf told JC Sport: "We took heart from playing against a team right up there in our league. We were expecting a much tougher opposition and we'll give them a much better game in the return leg."
