Israel completed a double over Great Britain in their pursuit of a place in the 2013 Handball World Championship finals.

After winning at Crystal Palace last week, Israel turned on the style in the second game to win 29-20.

The result all but ends Britain’s chances of making the finals and puts Israel in pole position with qualification games against Austria still to come.

Having beaten Great Britain on each of their past five meetings, Israel were accused of being complacent in the first game at Crystal Palace.

They were made to work hard by the home side but emerged unscathed with Chen Pomeranz leading the way with seven goals.

Avishay Smoler and Daniel Mircus both scored five, while Dan Nathan grabbed a hat-trick to seal victory in London.

Britain, who have only ever won a single competitive match, produced an impressive performance in Rishon LeZion before falling away after the break.

With the score 13-13 at half-time, Israel scored four quick goals without replay to take the game away from their opponents and carve out a comfortable win.

“We probably lost the game in the first two and a half minutes of the second half when they scored four goals without reply,” Britain’s assistant coach Bill Baillie told Handball News.

“They took out Steven Larsson, and put a lot more pressure on us and the crowd got behind them.

“We stabilised, but there was no way back and quite early in the second half we lost both Martin Hare and Robin Garnham with ankle injuries. Losing two experienced defenders meant we were just too exposed.”
