Ice-cool Israelis

Israel sealed promotion into Division Two of the European Team Championships after winning a 14-team competition in Iceland.

While Britain's top athletes were contesting Division One of the European Team Championships in Stockholm, Israel won the Division Three event, finishing ahead of ahead of Cyprus and Moldova in Reykjavik.

Israel displayed the greatest dominance in the vertical jumps. Having finished fourth in the triple jump with 12.24 metres a day earlier, Danielle Frenkel won the high jump with a leap of 1.84 metres. Dmitriy Kroyter (2.18 metres) took the men's high jump crown.

Jillian Schwartz, who emigrated from America in 2009, entered the pole vault competition at 4.10 metres after all her competitors had been eliminated, and duly won at this height. Yavgeniy Olhovsky, also a product of the American collegiate system, took the men's pole vault at 5.05 metres.

The Israel team won maximum points in six other events with Dustin Emrani, Moges Tesseme, Olga Lenskiy, Anstasia Metskeyev and Rotem Battat impressing.
