I know I can improve and I will, says Ahrens

London-based Israeli Danny "Kid" Ahrens continued his winning start to his professional career with a four round points victory over Briton Lewis van Poetsch at a Jewish Care boxing dinner.

The 20-year-old light-middleweight was a comfortable victor on the referee’s scoreboard. But although Ahrens boxed confidently and aggressively in the first two rounds, he did leave himself open to occasional counters from a determined opponent and tired visibly in the fourth.

Ahrens conceded afterwards that "the last round could have been better. I was a bit tired and my hand was a bit low. But this is something I’ll work on when I am back in the gym. I’ve had a long break since my last fight [in February] and it was difficult getting back into a rhythm."

On the plus side, he had enjoyed boxing in front of a Jewish crowd at the Park Plaza Riverbank in central London. "I feel this is my audience. They give me support and it feels good." His next fight is expected to be at a dinner for another Jewish charity, Habaid, on November 18.

Van Poetsch had been a late replacement and Ahrens’s manager/promoter Robert Waterman said he was a tougher adversary than the scheduled opponent. "Danny wanted to put on a show for the crowd and was probably over-eager in the first round," Waterman added. "He has a lot of ability but is still a novice." There would be changes to his training regime.
