Shachar Head underlined her status as the golden girl of British Powerlifting after claiming the world title in Glasgow.

The 15-year-old from Newton Abbot broke several records on her way to winning the teenage one class at the World Drug Free Powerlifting World Championships.

She also finished second in the 80kg open class behind world record holder Mary Anderson following another excellent performance.

Head lifted 125.5kg in the squat, 75kg in the bench press and produced a 145kg deadlift for a world record combined total 345.5kg. Crowned JC Young Sportsperson of the Year in October, she also broke her own world best in the deadlift after lifting a staggering 150kg.

"I woke up on Sunday and I just couldn't believe I was a world champion," she said.

"Never in a million years did I ever expect to be a Powerlifting world champion when I grew up.

"I've only been doing Powerlifting for a couple of years and to have won the British and Europeans as well as the Maccabi prize has made it an amazing year. Hopefully I can now do it all over again next year because it has been brilliant."

Head will now concentrate on qualifying for April's British Championships by taking part in qualifying in January.

Coach Chris Morgan said: "It was amazing. She achieved 10 out of 10 clean lifts and was completely unfazed by the occasion."
