Hartsbourne revel in Glancy glory

Hartsbourne regained the Glancy Trophy following an excellent set of performances from their players at the tournament at Shirley Golf Club.

The Hertfordshire club won four trophies, including the main prize, The Glancy, which is awarded to the team recording the aggregate of the lowest six scores in the singles combined with the three lowest foursome scores.

Winning the top honour for the fifth time in seven years, Hartsbourne’s team featured Mark Cohen, who was the captain, Jeremy Bohn, Michael Charles, Mark Gershinson, Gary Marin, Mark Posniak, Josh Ralton and Stephen Schindler, with the club captain Martin Vincent. Whitefield finished runners-up followed by Abridge Jewish Golf Society.

Nicky Harris of Whitefield returned the best gross score of 71 to win the Hartsbourne Cup. He beat Hartsbourne’s Jeremy Bohn by three shots, with Bohn taking home the Glasgow Trophy.

In the foursomes, Matt Bernstein combined with Harris to return a fine score of 69 to secure the Coombe Hill Trophy.

The Glancy is the most prestigious event on the golfing calendar and is arranged under the auspices of the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies. The competition is open to all the clubs and societies affiliated to the association with each team consisting of eight men.

In order to more reflect the changing profile of the competing teams with societies becoming more of a factor, the organising committee divided the entries into two divisions with only those in the lower division able to win certain categories and from that division WAGOS were the dominant team with Sussex JGS also successful.

A spokesman for the AJGCS said: "The effort put in by Shirley was exceptional, ensuring an enjoyable weekend for participants and supporters. From the Shabbat dinner for ‘out of towners’, to the Bollywood-themed Saturday night party and finally the presentation event, everything was top class."

Integral to the spirit of the weekend, in addition to the competitive golf, is the coming together from across the UK and Eire of Jewish golfers where new friendships are made and old ones nurtured.
