Haifa suffer more Champions League anguish

articlemain

Maccabi Haifa lost their fifth consecutive Champions League match as they were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich in Germany on Wednesday night.

The Israeli champions have failed to hit the target in 450 minutes and look a pale shadow of the team that is nine points clear and has a 100 per cent record in the Israeli Premier Division.

In a match dominated by the Germans, a 62nd minute strike from Ivica Olic was all that separated the teams, although Munich were missing star men Frank Robery and Arjen Robben.

Tormented by the guile and movement of Mario Gómez all evening, Haifa were unable to keep Munich at bay.

Munich came close to opening the deadlock early in the second half when a stinging free-kick from Sebastian Schweinsteiger grazed the bar.

The goal came 17 minutes into the second half when Gomez latched on to a delicious through ball. He fired goalwards. Visiting keeper Nir Davidovitch parried the shot but Olic was on hand to rifle home.

The result saw Munich keep alive their qualification hopes and complete a group double over Haifa.

Haifa conclude their European campaign at home to Group A winners Bordeaux on December 8.
