Goodman races to middle distance double

articlemain

Athletics Stanmore athlete Richard Goodman won both the 800m and 1500m under-17 races in the Young Athletes League in Norwich last week.

Goodman, 15, achieved one of his season's ambitions by breaking the two minute barrier, winning in 1:59.8. Delighted with the performance, he said: "I ran a tactical race and was very pleased to win in such good time. I had just completed a very tough training week for elite young athletes at St Mary's College, Twickenham.

"But it made this win all the more worthwhile."

Goodman's team-mate James Grant, 17, achieved a personal best of 4.10m in the National Junior League pole vault at Eton, to help his club Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers reach the National Junior League final, taking place in Derby next month.

Grant said: "I was finding the four metre mark a very tough barrier for some months but I finally managed it at the end of June and again a week later. It was really hot for the Eton fixture but that actually suits the vaulters. I hope I am selected for the Derby event but this new personal best has given me a real boost and will motivate me during the winter's training to go forward and try improve my peformance."
