Gold left frustrated after Buckingham defeat

Lodnon Lions failed to build on Wednesday night’s impressive performance and win over Wodson Park losing by a solitary goal to Buckingham Athletic.

The continuity manager Tony Gold wanted to take into the game was all but annihilated with three of the back four from Wednesday’s clean sheet unavailable or unable to play.

How Lions failed to leave Buckingham without at least a point is a mystery. Dominating 90 per cent of the game, they certainly deserved better, but sometimes football can be a cruel game and one poor lapse of concentration defensively resulted in a soft goal and proved decisive with Lions left chasing the game on a dreadful pitch.

Gold said: "We did everything we had to do against a team that just smashed the ball from back to front on a shocking pitch apart from putting the ball in the back of the net and to get positive scorelines you need to do that.

“We conceded a soft goal which no-one in our back four took responsibility for and we paid the ultimate price.

In terms of the basic performance I believe it was everything that I could have asked for even on a dreadful pitch.

“But that doesn’t detract from the fact that it was a hard defeat to take seeing as 90 per cent of the game was played in the Buckingham half. The players need to understand that in football you need to play with confidence and belief and when a team dominates a game like we did today and it doesn’t capitalise on that domination it starts to force situations and try too hard which has a detrimental effect.

“Today, for what ever reason, we just didn’t get the rub of the green and nothing went for us that’s football”.
