A four-goal salvo from top-scorer James Gershfield saw London Lions put a huge marker down for their title credentials as they crushed defending champions Standon & Puckeridge at Rowley Lane.

Again fielding a settled side, Lions raced out of the gates and found themselves two goals up inside the opening four minutes against second-placed Standon. GERSHFIELD opened his account for the day before Austin Lipman’s 40-yard pass found skipper JOSH KENNET who drilled the ball home.

Lions made it 3-0 on 15 minutes when Kennet broke away and teed up Gershfield, but his mishit fell kindly for CHARLIE KASLER to score.

Lions then scored possibly the goal of the game, when a 30-pass move ended in LIPMAN getting in on the act and making it four.

By now Standon were reeling and the fifth came before the interval. JAKE FURMAN this time scored from a wicked deflection – the visitors knew it wasn’t going to be their day.

This was compounded when Lions’ keeper David Myers saved a spot-kick to have his moment of glory on a day for the attackers.

Making some substitutions early in the second half, Lions could have been forgiven for letting up, but they put last season’s champions to the sword.

Lipman found GERSHFIELD for goal number six, quickly followed by another from FURMAN.

GERSHFIELD made it eight, and then nine, to net four on the day and take his tally to 12 for the season so far, as Lions put daylight between themselves and their rivals at the top of the Herts County Premier in a day to remember.
