Flying start for Solomon

articlemain

Steve Solomon remains on course for Commonwealth Games gold after advancing to the second round of the Men's 400m in Glasgow.

The Australian national champion showed no signs of the injury which had hampered him in recent months, finishing his heat in 46:26 in his first serious competition since the national trials in April.

Solomon said: "I'm just knocking out the rust so to speak and I’ll come back tomorrow firing.

"I think I’ll have a whole new tank by tomorrow. When you haven’t raced in a while in that first one back you’re always a little bit rusty. But I was able to get through."

Solomon, 21, was the 13th fastest qualifier ahead of Tuesday's semi-finals at Hampden Park.

"Training has been going really well so I’m confident of where I am at," he said.

"I just need to get out a touch harder at the top end because once I get to the straight I know what to do."
