End of the road for heroic Furman

articlemain

Dean Furman tasted penalty shootout heartbreak at the Africa Cup of Nations as South Africa bowed out in the quarter-finals following an epic against Mali.

One of the stars of the tournament, midfielder Furman, 24, gave another impressive performance in his third competitive game for his country in a game that finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

With no goals in extra-time, the match went to penalties and Furman, the Oldham Athletic skipper, was one of three Bafana Bafana players to miss from the spot as Mali progressed 3-1.

Furman struck his shot well, but too close to keeper So Diakite who stuck out a hand to divert the shot.
