League 2 strugglers Barnet completed a sensational coup on Friday after announcing they had signed former Netherlands midfielder Edgar Davids.

Now 39, Davids has played for some of Europe's elite clubs, including Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax, AC Milan and Spurs, and Bees chairman Tony Kleanthous believes the move to appoint the player as joint head coach will galvanise the club for whom he has also signed forms to play.

"I'm happy to explore my possibilities and share my knowledge and experience with Barnet Football Club," said Davids.

"It's an opportunity to help them in the right direction and I'm very excited about the challenge ahead.

"They have talented players but they are playing way under their potential."

Davids retired from the game two years ago following a brief spell with Crystal Palace.

Club Chairman Tony Kleanthous said "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Edgar as part of our exciting set up at Barnet FC.

"We have world-class training facilities that are now attracting world-class players and I feel, despite recent results, that these are exciting times ahead for our Club."

Davids will work alongside current boss Mark Robson in the dugout and at the club's training ground - the Hive - in Edgware.

Robson said: ""I am delighted to welcome Edgar to our club. His experience as a player throughout his illustrious career will be a massive benefit to all our players and I look forward to forming a strong partnership with him."

Barnet Director of Football Paul Fairclough said: "The capture of Davids is a statement of intent by our club to improve results and lay further foundations for the future.

"Edgar is a world renowned footballer and will be a great example to all our young players.

"He's expressed a genuine concern to help and be part of Barnet Football Club. I believe the combination of Edgar and Mark will be dynamic."

The Bees, who are without a win in the league this season, entertain Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.
