Dean Furman: I felt like a star

articlemain

Dean Furman says he felt like a movie star after winning the Mitre Goal of the Season trophy at the annual Football League Awards.

The Oldham midfielder won with his sensational long-range strike against Notts County.

Furman was up against the likes of Southampton’s prolific Rickie Lambert and highly-rated Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan.

And the 22-year-old says he was left stunned after hearing his name announced at the lavish dinner at The Brewery in London.

“It was a bit like being at the Oscars,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting to win, and after seeing the other goals, I wasn’t sure at all but it’s great that the judges recognised there is talent in the lower
divisions.

“My parents cannot stop smiling. My dad was there with me and was so proud and my mum’s definitely got a spring in her step after that.”

“It was a fantastic strike. There were about 14 passes leading up to the goal and I thought about passing it on if I’m honest. But I hit it pretty well and it flew in. It’s the best I’ve ever scored.”
