Davids: It’s time for cool heads

Edgar Davids says that keeping Barnet in the Football League would be one of the biggest achievements of his career.

The Bees dropped into the relegation zone following the 3-2 defeat at Torquay on Tuesday and the Barnet player-manager, who is Jewish, has called on fans to make tomorrow’s final home game at Underhill a day to remember.

"We must not let the occasion get to us," said Davids ahead of the match against Wycombe Wanderers.

"Although I don’t go to synagogue, I will say a little prayer before the game as this is an important period in the club’s history.

"It’s crucial we are playing in the Football League when we move to the new ground in Edgware next season."

It’s crucial we are playing in the Football League when we move to the new ground in Edgware next season.

Davids, who is 40 and was born in Suriname, joined the Bees in October and he believes the team are good enough to stay in League 2.

"Keeping Barnet up is one of the toughest jobs I have ever faced in football, but it’s clear the team has improved since I took charge. The players certainly have more belief.

"I love the intensity of the English game and I would like to be in charge here next season, but things can change very quickly in football."

It was after a conversation with Louis van Gaal that Davids, a Champions League winner, decided to move into management and he said he thrives on the pressure of the English game.

"I love English football,” he said. “I like the intensity and the fans. They know good football and appreciate it. You don’t get that in other countries.

"It's totally different being a coach to a player. I want to see how far I can go."

Asked why there are not more Jewish players in the Football League, Davids said: "The talent is there and I’m sure there will be plenty of scouts at the Maccabiah Games in July."
