Daniels stars as Styal Souths win Challenge Cup

articlemain

Styal Souths pulled off one the shocks of the season against league champions Bawali Shreef to lift the Challenge Cup.

In a low-scoring encounter against previously unbeaten Bawali, South won the toss and batted first on a lively wicket.

Steve Glicher and Garry Essue added 31 for the first wicket before Glicher was caught at slip. Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and only a 50-partnership between Akiva Lieberman (20) and John Saxon (15) was of any substance.

Styal collapsed and 96-4 soon became 121 all out. South knew that this was a well below par score and had to come up with the right approach in their attempt to win the game.

The reply was immediate. Andy Daniels took two wickets with his first two balls and it was game on.

Dan Glicher opened from the other end and also took a wicket and the score after two overs was 6-3. Daniels' next over went for five but also took a wicket and the score was 11-4. Could this continue? It certainly could with Glicher keeping the party going and Bawali were deep in trouble at 16-5.

Man-of-the-match Daniels then took another two wickets and finished with 5-27, and Bawali had no response.

Imran Yousaf then took over and dismissed another two batsmen. A run-out soon followed and Bawali were all out in the 11th over for just 42.

In presenting the trophy to Captain Steve Glicher, chairman of the league Paul Greaves said that he had "never seen anything like it in all his years".

An incredible team performance in which everyone participated.
