Cream of the crop pushing for honours at Maccabi awards

articlemain

The community’s top athletes will gather in north London on Sunday night for the bi-annual Maccabi GB Sports Awards and gala.

Co-hosted by 2006 senior winner, Jo Ankier, television presenter Graham Miller and BBC Radio 5’s Rob Nothman, the top junior and senior sporting talents will be announced at the event, which is organised in partnership with UJIA. Wales Under 21 and Bristol Rovers star Joe Jacobson, Maccabi Herzliya’s Josh Kennet and blind cricketer Daniel Field are among the candidates for the main award.

Table tennis starlet Zak Zilesnik, triathlete Lara Nyman, karate kid Jenna Shilston and golfer Mark Kuber are on the junior shortlist.

Daniel Morris, Maccabi’s major events and organising manager, said: “Our community’s top athletes don’t receive much acknowledgement for their efforts which makes our award ceremony unique and all that more important.

“Many of the athletes have had involvement with Maccabi GB at some point, so the evening also showcases how we’re investing in our community and highlights that investment paying dividends.”

The night will also see Maccabi celebrate their 70th anniversary and feature a screening of MGB film entitled ‘Living Flame – Our Future in Your Hands’, hosted by former MGB chairman Clive Geller.

Morris said: “Maccabi plays a vital role in the community, proven by the fact that we continue to go from strength to strength.”

Awards shortlist: Pentland Senior Sportsperson of the Year: Daniel Field, Daniel Grant, Joe Jacobson, Josh Kennet, Jenna Shilston, Sam Sloma.

Jewish Chronicle Young Sportsperson of the Year: Megan Bell, Amy Hyman, Marc Kuber, Megan Moore, Lara Nyman, Josh Pistol and Zak Zilesnik.
