Coronation challenge for Davis

Coronation Street could be set to take on the MJSL next season after Steve Davis revealed plans for the 2012 Ryan Lustgarten Shield.

Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw in the long-running soap opera, is hoping to bring a whole host of stars to honour the memory of his godfather.

Thomas is keen to make the 10th anniversary of the tournament a memorable one with actors from other famous soaps also expected to turn out for a celebrity team against a number of MJSL sides.

Davis, who will organise the match, is also hoping to hold a dinner to help raise money for charity in Lustgarten's honour.

"Ryan Thomas is really keen on doing something special next year," said Davis.

Maccabi could play a team full of celebrities

"He's thinking about bringing a team full of actors and famous people so we'll be having discussions over the next year about making it happen."

Manchester Maccabi claimed the 2011 Lustgarten Shield on Sunday after defeating Westdene in the four-team tournament.

Last season's Jewish FA Cup winners, who were a late entry following the withdrawal of two MJSL teams, eased to victory after seeing off defending champions Radcliffe in the semi-finals.

Ryan's All Stars, a team made up of childhood friends of Lustgarten, finished third in the tournament after they emerged 3-1 winners over Radcliffe. "It was a big success," added Davis.

"The weather wasn't great but everyone enjoyed it and now we can look forward to something special next year."
