Cohen 'proud' of Maccabi futsal team

Maccabi GB Futsal slipped down to third in the FA National Futsal League Southern Division Two after the second round of matches.

Jonny Cohen’s men made another flying start with a 5-1 success over Reading with goals from Adam Joselyn, Lee Bibring, Jonathan Green, David Leiwy and Jamie Wolfson.

A last-minute equaliser from Russell Goldstein saw them draw match two 2-2 against Gloucester Futsal Revolution. Green also found the net.

League leaders Kaunas proved too strong with Leiwy grabbing a consolation in a 3-1 defeat in the penultimate match.

Maccabi lost a seven-goal thriller in the last match of the day, going down 4-3 against Plymouth University with Leiwy (2) and Green on target again.

Manager Jonny Cohen said: "It was a disappointing day only picking up four points, but I have nothing but the greatest admiration for the players today. With only three substitutes, and just one in our last game, their efforts and commitment cannot be disputed.

"At various stages we played in a superb fashion, prompting the director of the league to tell us that we were the best futsal team in the league and that he would be recommending the England coaches to come and watch our future games.

"Overall, I'm extremely proud of the team’s achievements so far, but this emotion is tinged with a feeling of frustration knowing that if we had the full squad from Vienna playing in both match days that we would stand a very good chance of winning this league.

"It's not all over yet and we will be aiming for a clean sweep in Matchday Three which takes place in Plymouth on March 4."
