Cohen clinches it for Oakhill Lions

articlemain

Oakhill Lions won a topsy-turvy game 3-2 with a last minute winner from Dan Cohen. Joni Kleiman had put them in front early on before Saul Clarke and Ben Rose put Westdene ahead at half time. Alex Goodman got Oakhill’s equaliser before Cohen’s winner, to the dismay of Westdene manager Steve Davis.

“It could have gone either way. think it was a very good advert for the MJSL considering we’re both in bottom four or five.”

Cohen’s shot was deflected in by Joni Kleiman after just two minutes to put the visitors ahead but Westdene came back strongly, and started to take control of the contest as the half wore on, and drew level as Rose won a penalty which Clarke stepped up to convert. Rose then put Westdene ahead with a marvellous lob from 30 yards after a through ball from Jay Rosenthal. The home team could have gone in further ahead but hit the post and missed a couple of clear cut chances.

The home side were made to pay for their profligacy as Oakhill got stronger in the second half, and Goodman eventually equalised, heading home following a cross at the back post, before Cohen won the game late on with a fierce shot from inside the area. Player-manager Jonathan Ison, in his last game for Oakhill, was pleased to have won a tight match.

“I thought a draw would possibly have been a fair result. Both teams play good football, we showed we can play better than our league position shows. We were lucky enough to win it in the last minute and hopefully it will lead to a good run of form.”
