Centurion Brand leads LMV home

articlemain

A superb unbeaten 165 from captain Adam Brand earned London Maccabi Vale 1st their first victory in Middlesex Sunday League Division Two as they demolished Birkbeck College by 112 runs.

LMV openers Danny Caro and Richard Black made a steady start against a College team who, due to late arrivals, took to the field with eight players for the first couple of overs.

Unbeaten on 10, Caro was forced to retire hurt with a back injury early on, bringing Brand to the crease. Together with Black, the Team GB Maccabiah pair put on 100 in a partnership featuring some excellent running on a big pitch on the main strip at Southgate’s Walker Ground.

Black was dismissed for 35 and as Brand started to hit out, the LMV batsmen looked to give him as much of the strike as possible. Jerome Colmans was soon back in the pavilion and with Brand accelerating with an array of strokes around the wicket, he was joined by Nigel Rothband. The pair put on 112 with Rothband contributing eight.

Brand, who blasted 24 boundaries, smashed the final ball of the 40-overs innings for six as LMV, sponsored by Bank Hapoalim Private Banking, closed on 305-3.

Birkbeck never looked like threatening the target as Daniel Cohen (2-33) and Saul Weitzman kept things tight early on.

The middle order punished any loose deliveries and increased the tempo but Andy Landesberg (2-53) and Brand (2-10) ensured that no batsman could settle although LMV still put down a couple of chances in the field.

It was left to Jonathan Galloway (3-14) to mop up the tail as Birkbeck were dismissed for 195.
