Bernstein buoyed by Euro display

FA chairman David Bernstein says England can be proud of their performance at Euro 2012 after they suffered another penalty shootout heartbreak at the quarter-final stage.

Having reached the last eight as group winners, England tumbled out after Ashley Young and Ashley Cole failed to convert their spot-kicks following a goalless draw against Italy.

Bernstein said: "I think there are a great deal of positives — the performance of the team, the commitment of the team, the togetherness of the squad.

“That spirit started to grow again. People started to talk about winning the competition and so on.

“I think Roy Hodgson has made a real impact very, very quickly. His organisational skills are very clear. I think we have a good base to move forward from.

“We all know there are certain shortcomings in the way we play and we need to move forward on that.”

“It’s disappointing to lose a quarter-final again in the way we have. It’s not what we’re trying to do so the glass is half-full. There’s a way to go."
